So You THINK You Want to Become a Fire Fighter?
Have you thought about becoming a Fire Fighter EMT or both?
Do you do a double-take when you see a fire truck? Do you not faint when you see blood? Can you get dressed fast? You MIGHT just have what it takes to join the Fire Service. Here are a few starting tips to see if the #firefighterlife is for you:
- Learn CPR. One of many steps to becoming a first responder, EMTs and FireFighters must be proficient in Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which is a handy life skill, in or out of the fire service.
- Live a clean life and have a good driving record. Drug and alcohol abuse, criminal records, and bad driving have no place in the fire service. This is a high-stress life, but one where the public depends on us being our best. Stay out of trouble, drive carefully and watch what you say and do. This is part of the job.
- Be Healthy. Get a physical, eat right and start a regular exercise routine. You cannot take care of others if you do not take care of yourself.
- Be a strong team player. Work on your communication and teamwork skills. In the Fire Service, members must be able to work together and develop a connection. That way, at the end of the shift, everyone goes home.
- Join a volunteer department. By becoming a volunteer, whether operational or administrative, you will be emersed in firehouse life and quickly know if this lifestyle is for you. You will gain mentors while filling a much-needed role in our local fire system.
