Thank you for your interest in joining the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton (OWL) Volunteer Fire Department.

OWL has an IMMEDIATE need for certified firefighters and EMTs (or higher) to join our ranks.

OWL is one of the busiest volunteer fire departments in the United States, with over 85 years of service to our community. We provide fire suppression, EMS, rescue services, and community support to approximately 80,000 residents in our 27-square-mile first-due area. Operational Members are assigned to crews staffing units on weekday evenings, weekends, and holidays.

OWL seeks CERTIFIED FIREFIGHTERS to serve as Lead Firefighters interested in pursuing training as a DPO (Driver Pump Operator) and/or an I/O (Incident Officer).

OWL Firefighters respond to various calls including, residential, commercial, and outside fires, auto accidents, and HazMat incidents. In Prince William County, crews staffing fire apparatus are also dispatched to medical emergencies.

Preferred Applicant Certifications for Lead Firefighters:

  • Pro Board Firefighter I and II
  • Virginia Department of Fire Programs (VDFP) MAYDAY or RIT
  • VA EMT-B or higher
  • Hazmat
  • EVOC I, II and III

OWL is seeking first responders with an EMT certification interested in becoming Lead EMTs (a.k.a. Attendant in Charge) and/or Ambulance Drivers.

  • Virginia State-certified EMT-B (or higher)
  • EVOC I and II

Firefighters respond to residential, commercial, and outside fires, auto accidents, and hazardous situations. Their tasks may include deploying hoses to hydrants, operating pumps to supply water to hoses, deploying/climbing ladders, and using various other tools. Firefighters may also be required to enter burning buildings to extinguish a fire and rescue individuals, pets, and property. In Prince William County, crews staffing fire apparatus are also dispatched to medical emergencies.

OWL firefighter recruits attend a training academy where they will complete Firefighter I & II, an entry-level course for new firefighters that includes a combination of classroom study, scenarios, and homework to prepare recruits to carry out fire ground functions under the direct supervision of an officer or experienced firefighter. They will also complete HazMat Operations, LPG Lecture, Mayday Firefighter Down, and Mayday RIT certifications. The course length is 420 hours.

While attending fire training classes, recruits will be assigned to a crew to gain on-the-job experience that will supplement academy training.

Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) are certified entry-level patient care providers. OWL’s EMTs respond to medical emergencies, provide prehospital care, and transport patients to the hospital.

EMT trainees will attend a state-approved, competency-based, scenario-driven EMT Program. Students will gain entry-level cognitive, psychomotor, and affective competence via dynamic presentations and simulations. The course is 120 hours. Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the National Registry EMT Examination to obtain national and state certification.

EMT trainees will be able to respond to emergency calls while working on their EMT certification. Responding to emergency calls and training at the stations provide the foundation needed to become successful EMTs.

OWL’s Junior Program is designed for members between the ages of 16 and 17 years and 11 months. A Senior Member of the OWL manages the Junior Program with oversight from a Chief Officer. After completing core training and a physical, Juniors may enroll in a Firefighter or EMT Class. They can also ride on apparatus and respond to emergency calls.

Juniors are not allowed to enter IDLH (Immediate Danger to Life or Health environments) while on emergency calls but may assist crews. They will be allowed to participate in all training during their training at the Fire Academy.

Additional Requirements include:

  • Have parental/guardian approval (a parent or guardian must attend the initial membership meetings)
