Snow Storm Safety: How to Stay Safe Before, During & After Winter Weather

Winter weather can be beautiful — but snowstorms also bring hazards like slick roads, power outages, and cold-weather emergencies. OWL VFD encourages all residents to take a few key steps to stay safe before, during, and after snow events.

Stay Informed Before the Storm

Knowing what’s coming and having a plan is half the battle.

  • Sign up for emergency alerts:
PWC Alerts delivers severe weather notices, safety warnings, and county updates straight to your phone or email.

  • Track weather watches and warnings:
Check the list of current weather advisories for Prince William County to see if a winter storm or other hazardous weather is expected.

  • Follow Prince William County Emergency Management:
For news, preparedness tips, and official guidance on winter storms and other emergencies, visit the county’s emergency info portal.

Prepare Before Snow Arrives

Take simple steps to protect your home, family, and vehicle.

  • Build or update an emergency kit with flashlights, blankets, water, snacks, medications, and warm clothing.

  • Make an emergency plan:
Talk with your family about how you’ll communicate, where you’ll meet, and what to do if you lose power or can’t leave your home.

During the Storm: Prioritize Safety

Once snow begins falling, conditions can change quickly.

  • Avoid travel if possible. Roads and bridges can become slippery and dangerous with snow and ice.

  • Expect slower travel and give snowplows room to work:
Snow removal on county roads is coordinated through VDOT; priority is given based on traffic volume and needs.

  • Keep cell phones and devices charged in case of power outages.

 Stay Safe During Power Outages

Storms can cause trees and ice to damage power lines.

  • Report outages to your utility provider (e.g., NOVEC if you’re in their service area).
Avoid downed lines and treat them as energized.

  • Use generators outdoors only and never in an enclosed space to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

After the Storm: Take Extra Care

Once the snow has stopped, risks can still linger.

  • Clear snow and ice from walkways and driveways carefully — shoveling can be hard on the body.

  • Check on neighbors who may need assistance with snow removal or supplies.

  • Continue monitoring local alerts for any change in conditions or additional advisories.
