From Junior Member to Lifelong Commitment: Jared “Pebbles” Lawrence’s Story

Not everyone grows up dreaming of joining the fire service. For Jared “Pebbles” Lawrence, it wasn’t a lifelong calling—or even a childhood fascination beyond a few toy fire trucks and trying on his dad’s gear during fire school. Like many, his introduction to the fire service came unexpectedly.
“I was volun-told,” Jared recalls with a laugh. “One day, my dad mentioned his fire department had a junior program. The next thing I knew, I was signed up. Just like that.”
What began as a reluctant first step quickly became something more. Jared, like so many others who walk through our doors unsure of what to expect, caught the bug. From the memorable days of being 14 and sleeping in a car bed in the bunk room, to building lasting friendships and finding his place in the department, his journey has been one of growth, learning, and pride.
“This department has taught me a lot—some of it the hard way—but all of it worthwhile,” Jared shares. “I’ve learned to appreciate what we bring to our county, what we provide for each other, and how we stand out. Even when the odds are against you, doing the right thing, practicing your craft, and focusing on the little things makes all the difference.”
Through dedication and determination, Jared turned his volunteer experience into a career opportunity. He now serves not only his community as a volunteer, but also as a proud member of the fire service professionally. He credits OWL VFD for helping him get there.
“I take incredible pride in this department, in my family, in my OWL family, and in my career. This place helped me find my path—and I couldn’t be more grateful.”
The department helped Jared earn his Firefighter and EMT certifications and provided training to become a Driver Pumper Operator (DPO), a special-piece firefighter, and an incident officer (I/O). Ultimately, the experience led to a career as a firefighter for the City of Manassas Fire and Rescue Department.
This past February, OWL’s Operational Leadership Appointed him as Fire Lieutenant. At the March Company Meeting, he was bestowed with Life Membership status for his 20 years of active service.
OWL celebrates the journey of a young man who once hadn’t considered the fire service, only to discover a second home, a calling, and a community that helped shape who he is today.
