OWL VFD Introduces a Free Library in Honor of Chief Michael Clark

This week, the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department (OWL VFD) proudly introduces its newest community feature: a Little Free Library dedicated to Assistant Chief Michael Clark. Located in front of Station 14, this library is a tribute to Chief Clark’s lifelong commitment to service and education, embodying the OWL VFD’s spirit of community engagement.

The idea for the Little Free Library was conceived by Rescue Chief Sandra Williams, who, in addition to her leadership role at OWL VFD, serves as a school teacher by day. Her vision was to create a space where community members could exchange knowledge through the power of books, much like how Chief Clark continues to share his wisdom and experiences with the department.

So, what is a Little Free Library? At its heart, it’s a “take a book, share a book” exchange. These small wooden boxes offer a simple but profound opportunity for people to share literature. Open to all; the free book exchange encourages readers to either take a book or leave one behind, fostering a love for reading and community connection. The Little Free Library at OWL VFD will provide books for all ages, making it a welcoming space for families, individuals, and firefighters alike.

Chief Michael Clark, the library’s namesake, is a life member of OWL VFD and has served for 35. He continues to serve as an inspiration despite facing ALS, a diagnosis resulting from his many years of dedication to fire service. Although ALS has brought physical challenges, Chief Clark’s passion for OWL VFD remains strong. In addition to his position on the Board of Directors, he facilitates the department’s history group, preserving the organization’s legacy while sharing stories, lessons, and best practices with current members. His dedication to the fire department and the greater community makes this Little Free Library a fitting tribute.

This new addition to Station 14 is more than just a box of books—it’s a symbol of the OWL VFD’s commitment to education, community, and honoring the people who have shaped its history. The next time you’re in the area, stop by, grab a book, and join OWL VFD in celebrating Chief Michael Clark’s remarkable legacy.
