How to know if you have COVID-19 and what to do about it.

We’ve received a lot of questions about COVID-19; how to know if you have it, what to do if you have it.  Here are some guidelines and recommendations to practice and share:

  • The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has a public helpline for questions about coronavirus: 1-877-ASK-VDH3 (1-877-275-8343). Community resource specialists are available to answer questions from the public and in English or Spanish.
  • Visiting an emergency department with no symptoms will only further one’s risk of exposure and put a strain on resources for those who need it most. If you think you have the Corona virus, Sentara Hospital says to ask yourself these questions:

Do you have 2 of the 3 symptoms below?

  • Fever (100.4 degrees or higher)
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath

AND

In the last month, have you been in contact with someone who was confirmed or suspected to have COVID-19, OR have you traveled internationally or to an area with a known COVID-19 outbreak?

(Check the latest high-risk travel areas here)

IF NO:
Please, stay home. Continue to follow the CDC recommended prevention methods and monitor for a change in symptoms.

IF YES:
If you are BELOW age 60 and have no other health issues, you should stay home and self-quarantine for 14 days. If you are OVER age 60 OR have underlying health conditions, please follow these steps:

  1. Call your healthcare provider for further guidance.
  2. If you are having a life-threatening emergency, call 911 immediately.

Stay home if you are not feeling well. Continue to:

  • Model social distancing and practice good hygiene habits:
  • Stop handshaking – use other non-contact methods of greeting
  • Avoid touching your face and cover coughs and sneezes
  • Disinfect surfaces like doorknobs, tables, desks, and handrails regularly
  • Increase ventilation by opening windows or adjusting air-conditioning
  • Use tap and pay to limit the handling of cash

Stay Safe, Wash Your Hands, Be Kind.
