Volunteer EMT Maddi Waltsak Earned Cert: Inspired by Family, Driven to Serve

OWL Volunteer EMT Maddi Waltsak earned both her Virginia State EMT-Basic certification and her National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification—an exciting milestone that marks the beginning of her career in emergency medical services.

Maddi’s journey with OWL began in 2024 when she joined the department as a Junior Member. After recently turning 18, she transitioned into a Probationary Member, continuing a legacy of volunteer service that runs in her family. With both of her parents serving as former OWL members, Maddi grew up witnessing firsthand the impact that volunteering can have on both a community and the people who answer the call.

That early exposure helped shape a passion for helping others that continues to guide her today.

“I’ve always wanted to help people, and ever since I was little, I’ve been drawn to the medical field. I like being there for people when they need help the most, and being an EMT fulfills that.”

Now equipped with her EMT certification, OWL Volunteer Maddi is preparing for the next step in her journey. She will begin the internship process to earn her Operational Medical Director (OMD) endorsement, allowing her to serve as an operational EMS provider within the Prince William County Fire & Rescue System.

Looking even further ahead, Maddi has set her sights on becoming a paramedic, continuing to build the skills and experience needed to care for others during life’s most critical moments.
