Winter Emergency Preparedness

Prince William County offers outstanding tools to help residents prepare for winter storms and weather-related emergencies. OWL encourages community members to take advantage of these resources.

1. Build a Winter Storm Kit

Having essential supplies on hand can make all the difference during severe winter weather. Your kit should include:

  • Flashlights and extra batteries

  • Bottled water (one gallon per person per day)

  • Non-perishable food and a manual can opener

  • Blankets and warm clothing

  • First aid kit

  • Medications and medical supplies

  • Portable phone chargers

  • Pet food and supplies

Store your kit in an easily accessible place and check it regularly.

2. Power Outage Readiness

Heavy snow, ice, and high winds can cause outages. Prepare ahead:

  • Charge devices and keep backup power banks fully charged.

  • Have an alternative heat source that is safe for indoor use—never use grills or outdoor heaters inside.

  • Know where your flashlights are and keep fresh batteries nearby.

  • Keep refrigerators and freezers closed to preserve food longer.

  • If using a generator, place it outside only, at least 20 feet away from doors and windows to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.

3. Sign Up for Local Emergency Alerts (PWAlert)

Stay informed during emergencies by signing up for PWAlert, Prince William County’s official emergency notification system.

Residents receive real-time updates on:

  • Winter weather warnings

  • Road closures

  • Emergency shelter openings

  • Community alerts

Encourage family, friends, and neighbors—especially seniors—to sign up as well.

🏠 Warming Centers & Shelter Information

During extreme cold snaps, Prince William County activates warming centers and provides emergency shelter options for residents in need.

These centers offer:

  • Heated spaces

  • Restrooms

  • Information about additional support services

Sharing these resources is especially important for vulnerable populations, including older adults, unsheltered individuals, and families facing heating challenges.

📞 Knowing When to Call 911 vs. the Non-Emergency Line

Understanding which number to call helps ensure emergency responders are available when life-threatening situations occur.

Call 911 for Emergencies Such As:

  • Chest pain, difficulty breathing, or medical emergencies

  • Active fires or visible smoke

  • Vehicle accidents with injuries

  • Electrical hazards or downed live wires

  • Gas leaks

  • Any situation that poses an immediate threat to life or property

Call the PWC Non-Emergency Number for:

  • Non-injury vehicle accidents

  • Noise complaints

  • Welfare checks

  • Questions about road conditions, closures, or weather concerns

  • Reporting non-urgent hazards

Prince William County Non-Emergency Number:
📞 703-792-6500

Sharing this distinction helps reduce strain on the emergency system and ensures that 911 remains available for critical situations.
