Stay Safe This Halloween: Tips from OWL VFD
Halloween is a fun and festive night in our community, but it’s also one of the busiest nights of the year for first responders. From trick-or-treating mishaps to fire hazards caused by decorations, October 31 can present real safety risks if families aren’t prepared.
At OWL Volunteer Fire Department, we want every child, family, and neighbor in Occoquan, Woodbridge, and Lorton to enjoy Halloween safely. Here are some simple tips to keep the night both spooky and safe:
🎭 Costume Safety
-
Choose flame-resistant costumes and wigs.
-
Avoid costumes that are too long to prevent trips and falls.
-
Add reflective tape or glow sticks so children are visible to drivers.
-
Use face paint instead of masks when possible—masks can obstruct vision.
🚸 Trick-or-Treat Smart
-
Stay with a group and always have an adult present for young children.
-
Walk on sidewalks whenever possible—never dart across the street.
-
Cross streets at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
-
Carry flashlights to increase visibility.
🏠 Home & Decoration Safety
-
Use battery-operated candles in jack-o’-lanterns instead of open flames.
-
Keep decorations away from open flames, heaters, or exits.
-
Clear walkways and steps of obstacles to prevent trips.
-
If driving on Halloween night, slow down and watch closely for children.
