Be Prepared for Winter Weather

Winter is here, and with it comes the unpredictable nature of wintry precipitation, snowfall, and icy roads.  If you don’t have to go out, stay home, but if you do, remember to check the latest weather advisories, follow VDOT’s efforts to maintain road safety, and take precautions as a responsible driver.

Here is some information and tips to stay safe on the roads during winter.

What’s the Latest?

If you have to drive, keep informed about the latest weather advisories by checking the Winter Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service, which forecasts various snow accumulations throughout the day.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) offers information about road conditions, traffic, and incidents, as well as access to traffic cameras. Visit VDOT’s website, download their app, or call 511 (in Virginia).

You can also sign up for PWC Alerts. The Prince William County government uses this emergency notification system to send you emergency alerts and automated weather notifications through voice calls, texts, and/or emails before, during, and after a major crisis. When signing up, you can select which alerts you want to receive.

Follow @vadotnova and @NWS_BaltWash on social media for real-time updates and additional information about the weather and road conditions.

Preparation is Key:
Before a storm, VDOT crews pretreat interstates, primary roads, bridges, ramps, and overpasses with salt brine. Salt brine is a mixture of 77% water and 23% salt. When applied to the road, it leaves behind white lines of salt residue, often called brine lines. This method helps prevent ice from bonding to the pavement during the initial stages of a snowstorm, making it easier to keep the roads safe for travel.

As a responsible driver, you should plan by checking your trip’s forecast and be prepared to change your plans if weather conditions deteriorate. Always ensure your headlights are on while driving in low-visibility conditions, and follow these essential winter driving tips:

Reduce your speed and increase your following distance: Roads may be slippery, so give yourself extra time to react to sudden stops.

Use your brakes carefully. Avoid sudden braking and apply gentle, steady pressure to reduce the risk of skidding.

Keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle: This should include items like blankets, a flashlight, extra batteries, non-perishable food, and a first-aid kit.

Clear snow and ice from your vehicle: Before driving, make sure your windshield, windows, lights, and mirrors are free of ice and snow for better visibility.

Being prepared and staying informed is crucial for your safety on the road. Remember, together, we can make our roads safer during the winter season.
