OWL Life Member Volunteers at Wolf Trap
OWL’s certified and experienced members often find unique opportunities to use their skills. Life Member Jeff Scheulen’s volunteer service at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Virginia is a great example.
Scheulen, a National Registry Certified Paramedic, joined OWL in October 1975. He is not currently staffing units with OWL, but he has kept his skills fresh for the past four years as a National Park Service (NPS) EMS volunteer at Wolf Trap. The Wolf Trap EMS unit is fully staffed by volunteer EMS providers with at least a Nationally Registered EMT-Basic certification and receive EMS credentials through the National Park Service. The volunteers serve under the direction of a career Park Ranger designated as an Emergency Services Coordinator.
Paramedic Scheulen and his fellow volunteers staff a first aid station and roam the venue during performances to assist attendees and park staff. In the photo shared, he is conducting a health assessment check on Wolfie, the most important member of the staff, of course.
From May through early September he’s on-duty for various events at the venue, which include concerts that range from rock, soul, jazz, folk and bluegrass music, as well as the National Sympathy Orchestra (NSO). Several times a season, Wolf Trap shows movies on the large performance screens, while the NSO plays the music track live on stage. Paramedic Scheulen explained, “This year is a Star Wars movie, which is always a hit with the fans and staff alike. Volunteering at Wolf Trap is a great way of gaining additional patient care experience in a difference atmosphere as compare to 9-1-1 EMS.”
