Be Prepared for Winter Weather with OWL VFD
Winter is here, and with it comes the unpredictable nature of wintry precipitation, snowfall, and icy roads. As the temperature drops, it’s essential to stay informed and prepared for the challenging driving conditions that often accompany the season. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Northern Virginia District is fully equipped and ready to tackle the challenges of winter weather, and so is your local OWL Volunteer Fire Department (OWL VFD). Here is some information and tips to stay safe on the roads during winter.
What’s the Latest?
VDOT’s Northern Virginia District is closely monitoring the forecasts and is prepared to respond to snowfall, wintry precipitation, and rain expected to affect the region. To keep yourself informed about the latest weather advisories, be sure to check the Winter Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service, which provides forecasts for various snow accumulations throughout the day. Stay vigilant and be prepared to adjust your travel plans as needed.
Preparation is Key:
VDOT crews have already started pretreating interstates, primary roads, bridges, ramps, and overpasses with a solution known as salt brine. Salt brine is a mixture of 77% water and 23% salt, and when applied to the road, it leaves behind white lines of salt residue, often referred to as brine lines. This method helps prevent ice from bonding to the pavement during the initial stages of a snowstorm, making it easier to keep the roads safe for travel.
As a responsible driver, you should plan ahead by checking the forecast for your entire trip and be prepared to change your plans if weather conditions deteriorate. Always ensure your headlights are on while driving in low-visibility conditions, and follow these essential winter driving tips:
Reduce your speed and increase following distance: Roads may be slippery, so give yourself extra time to react to sudden stops.
Use your brakes carefully: Avoid sudden braking, and instead, apply gentle, steady pressure to reduce the risk of skidding.
Keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle: This should include items like blankets, a flashlight, extra batteries, non-perishable food, and a first-aid kit.
Clear snow and ice from your vehicle: Before hitting the road, make sure your windshield, windows, lights, and mirrors are free from ice and snow for better visibility.

As winter weather approaches, being prepared and staying informed is crucial for your safety on the road. If you don’t have to go out, stay home, but if you do, remember to check the latest weather advisories, follow VDOT’s efforts to maintain road safety, and take precautions as a responsible driver. Together, we can make our roads safer during the winter season.
