MVU512 (Mobile Ventilation Unit) was requested to assist on the scene of an underground transformer fire at the 1300 block of N. Veitch St. in Arlington. Arlington County Fire & Rescue reported that the fire was out on arrival, but there was significant smoke in the parking garage that required ventilation.
The fan, mounted on a Ford F-450 truck chassis, was manufactured by SuperVac and is powered by a Subaru aircraft engine that uses high octane gasoline. At full speed, the fan can move 250,000 cubic feet of air per minute.
The idea for this unit was the vision of two volunteer department chiefs, Dale City Volunteer Fire Department Chief Chris Hool and former OWL VFD Chief Ricky Arrington. The two departments worked together on the design and shared the cost.
