Auto Accident – Vehicle into Pole

Units from OWL, Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue, and Dale City Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched for a report of vehicle into a pole and a pedestrian struck. The live power pole fell on the car and began an electrical arcing. The driver was unable to exit his vehicle. Dominion Energy responded to the incident and worked quickly to secure the power lines so the driver could be safely extricated from the vehicle. Due to the severity of the accident, MAU512 (Mobile Air and Light Unit) was requested to assist with Prince William County Police Department’s accident investigation.

**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE**
Fatal Crash Investigation – On June 18 at 9:44PM, investigators with the Crash Investigation Unit responded to the area of Old Bridge Rd. and Cape Cod Ct. in Woodbridge (22192) to investigate a crash involving a pedestrian. The investigation revealed that the driver of a 2016 Ford Focus was traveling westbound on Old Bridge Rd., just past Cape Cod Ct., when the vehicle left the roadway and drove onto the sidewalk where the vehicle then struck a pedestrian who was walking his dog. The vehicle continued traveling before it struck a communications box and a Dominion Power pole, causing the pole to snap and fall into the roadway. Responding officers and bystanders provided first aid to the pedestrian until rescue personnel arrived. The pedestrian was transported to an area hospital where he died as a result of the injuries sustained during the crash. The dog, identified as a male Akita between 5-7 years old, died at the scene. Investigators determined the driver of the vehicle, identified as the accused, was intoxicated, and took him into custody. Following the investigation, the accused, identified as Banze Mwenze GENTIL, was arrested.
