OWL VFD Firefighter Chris Weber receives the 2021 Roger T. Fire Chief’s Award
How far would you go to volunteer for a community you love? It’s one thing to donate money or occasionally visit to help out, but it’s another to get on a plane and give up an entire weekend to volunteer. When Firefighter Chris Weber’s job relocated him to Atlanta, GA, he wasn’t able to find a volunteer opportunity like the one that’s offered here in Prince William County.
At least once a month, or when help is needed such as when winter weather is predicted and OWL VFD needs snow plow drivers to assist on calls, Weber catches a plane to fly to Woodbridge. On most trips, he spends Friday night, all day Saturday, and most of Sunday staffing at one of OWL VFD’s stations before catching a red-eye flight back to Atlanta for work at his paid job.
We honored him for his dedication to our community with the Roger T. Furr Chief’s Award.
Roger “Tommy” Furr served as OWL VFD’s Chief from 1968 to 1975. He received the 1973 William H. Spicer, Sr. Firefighter of the Year Award and the 1977 Betty Limerick Lifetime Service Award. In 1979 he was honored as a Life Member.
