OWL VFD’s 2021 Fred M. Lynn Fire Crew Member of the Year is Gustavo Coelho
OWL VFD’s 2021 Fred M. Lynn Fire Crew Member of the Year is Gustavo Coelho.In 2019, Coelho earned his firefighter certifications while graduating at the top of his recruit class. Since then he has become a special piece firefighter and often staffs as the lead firefighter on Tower 512. He has also completed the requirements for being a driver operator for the Mobile Air and Light Unit (MAU), the Brush Truck, and is currently training to be an Engine Driver Pump Operator. With these additional skills, Coelho can fill vital roles in the department’s apparatus staffing needs.
On top of all the training and personal advancement, Coelho also responded to a request for new Honor Guard members. Coelho traveled with the Honor Guard to Emmitsburg, Maryland, to represent OWL VFD at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony this past October.
In addition to regular duty crew responsibilities, Coelho frequently assists new fire recruits with academic and practical skills training. His mentorship helped fellow member, David H. Williams, also graduate at the top of the class. Not only does this reflect well on Coelho’s teaching skills, but it also further distinguishes OWL VFD as one of the finest volunteer departments in Prince William County.
The Fire Crew Member of the Year award is named in honor of Fred M. Lynn, who was a longtime resident of Prince William County. He was an OWL VFD Charter Member and served as the department’s first chief. Fred M. Lynn Middle School is also named in his honor.
