Heba Kamal, OWL VFD’s 2021 Junior Member of the Year
At our annual awards ceremony, Heba Kamal received the James W. Ludwig Owlet 2021 Junior Member of the Year award.
By day, Kamal is a Senior at Woodbridge Senior High School. By night (and weekend), she’s serving the community as a first responder.
In August 2020, Kamal joined OWL VFD’s Junior Department at age 16. During her time with the department, she has become a nationally registered EMT-B which is a college-level class that requires a significant time commitment to learn all the necessary skills to pass a rigorous written exam and practical skills examination. This is on top of her high school classes. She also completed the Prince William County BLS Protocols class and is now doing an internship to earn an endorsement by the Operational Medical Director as a certified EMS provider by the time she turns 18 in July.
Heba is not your average teenager. She understands the level of professionalism that Fire and EMS personnel must maintain while in real-world crisis situations that can be a matter of life or death. She’s become a leader in the Junior Department by helping others with training and becoming productive members of their duty crews.
In addition to this, she also volunteers at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center. She has been inspired by her experience at OWL VFD to pursue a career in healthcare.
