A Commitment to Service: An Interview With OWLVFD Firefighter Derek Wells
Since 1938 Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department (OWLVFD) has been proudly serving our area. An exemplary commitment to service to the community and quality of work has been passed on year after year, from our earliest members to those serving today. Our history of excellence is one each of our members is proud to be associated with.
One of these proud members is Derek Wells, who’s been serving with OWLVFD since August 2016. Wells was ready for something new and decided to give volunteer firefighting a chance.
“Honestly, I wasn’t sure what I was stepping into. But I made the leap to push myself. Expand my horizons as they would say,” he said.
Volunteer firefighters serve the community in a variety of ways, in addition to being on call for emergencies. OWLVFD, in particular, prides itself on its community safety initiatives and offering plenty of safety education opportunities to residents, school groups, etc.
“The first project I was involved in was helping change batteries in fire alarms. I was partnered with Chief which was very nerve-racking,” Wells said. “I mean it was the Chief so I wasn’t sure what to expect. It turned out great though!”
Wells currently serves as a firefighter on B crew at station 2 in Woodbridge. He graduated from fire school almost a year ago and is also working on finishing EMT training.
One thing we hear over and over from our volunteers is how many opportunities are open to you when you serve. The training, camaraderie and chances to learn and grow are endless.
“I’ve always felt like I’m worth something but the service just takes it up a notch,” Wells said.
Wells works for Inova Health System as a coding support specialist full time.
“I have been with Inova for over 12 years since I moved down here from NYC,” he said.
His position as firefighter allows him variety and plenty of opportunities to learn, grow and serve. He notes that it’s been hard juggling training, volunteering and working with a family, but he has been successful.
“They’re supportive so they understand the passion I have and what I have become as a firefighter, though,” Wells said.
For those interested in giving volunteering a shot, he encourages them to do just that.
“For someone interested in joining I would say just have patience. Be willing to sacrifice some nights and weekends. Enjoy and take in every moment like it’s your first,” he said.
