Why We Do What We Do

The Driving Forces Behind Our Members

As OWL VFD members, we are often asked why we do what we do. While each individual has their own unique set of responses to this question, we’ve come to realize over the years that there is a lot of overlap in our answers. We share common goals and hopes for our community. These are our biggest motivations for serving our community as volunteer firefighters and EMTs:

A Desire to Serve

It’s in all our blood to serve our community. Some of us wish to serve, because we come from a family of EMS personnel and want to carry on that tradition. Many of us knew we would perform exceptionally well in emergency situations and want to use that skill to help people. Others of us were simply looking for a way to give back to our community and we fell into this awesome group of rescue workers. We love to engage with our community, whether it’s through health fairs, educating kids within the schools or responding to an emergency.

A Love for What We Do

We all share a desire to help people. And honestly, when is a better time to help our neighbors than in a time of emergency? Clearly none of us are motivated by money; it’s the call to help those in need that keeps us coming back day after day. OWL VFD members share an intense passion for fire and rescue work.

An Interest in Learning

One of the greatest benefits of being an OWL VFD member is the training and education provided to you. Want to become an EMT or a firefighter? Join us! Do you aspire to be a leader? Get on board now! The passion of our trainers and the skills you can learn through hands-on experience while responding to calls and our tiered training program are the perfect way to learn and advance in the emergency services field.

A Sense of Belonging

The comradery within the OWL VFD family is simply unmatched. Every one of us is proud to be part of the OWL VFD team.

“Another reward to being an OWL member specifically is the title. Some of the most amazing firemen, medics and leaders have been bred at OWL,” said firefighter Julia Jordano. “We carry a reputation of being the best, and it’s an honor to volunteer here.”

Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department (OWL VFD) is one of the largest and busiest volunteer fire departments in the United States, with almost 300 members. OWL VFD provides fire suppression, EMS care, and rescue services to 80,000 residents in our 27 square mile area through the operation of three fire stations. OWL volunteer Firefighters and EMT’s work the 6 pm to 6 am shift, five days a week, plus 24/7 holidays and weekends. For more information on OWL VFD, become a fan on their Facebook page here.
