OWL VFD Light and Air Unit
On Tuesday, March 5th, members of OWL VFD went to Fesco Emergency Sales in Elkridge Maryland to conduct an inspection trip on our new Light and Air unit. Radio designation, Mobile Air Unit 512 (MAU512) is a specialized vehicle with the purpose of providing lighting and the ability to re-fill cylinders for self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) on the scene of large scale incidents. The current unit purchased in 1999, served OWL and the citizens of Prince William and Northern Virginia faithfully for almost 20 years including responding to the Pentagon during the tragedy of 9/11.
OWL’s new Light and Air is a 2018 Kenworth chassis with a custom body built by Hackney Emergency Vehicles. The capabilities of the vehicle include two Light Towers mounted to the vehicle roof to provide scene lighting, the ability to re-fill 4 SCBA cylinders at the same time, and will carry 12 complete SCBA packs and 84 spare cylinders. OWL VFD expects to take delivery of the new vehicle in March and will begin the process of mounting all equipment and preparing it to go in service by June 2019.
